What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method is an approach to mind and body integration that was created Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. The fundamental principles focus on balance concentration, control, center, awareness, and breath. BASI Pilates added flow and harmony for a more holistic and mind/body approach. Pilates enhances a core strength that increases flexibility, coordination and improve activities of daily living. Pilates engages the entire person not just muscles. It will help improve stamina, posture, alignment, and core strength.

Pilates offers numerous benefits, making it a popular choice for many individuals looking to improve their physical fitness and overall well-being. Here are some key benefits of a Pilates session:

  1. **Improved Core Strength**: Pilates exercises focus on strengthening the core muscles, including the abdomen, lower back, hips, and glutes. A strong core enhances stability and balance.

  1. **Increased Muscle Tone**: Pilates exercises target various muscle groups, leading to better muscle tone and definition, especially in the core, arms, and legs.

  1. **Improved Balance and Coordination**: Pilates promotes better balance and coordination through controlled, precise movements. This can be particularly beneficial for older adults or those recovering from injuries.

  1. **Reduced Stress and Improved Mental Health**: The mindful, controlled movements in Pilates can help reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. This mental focus can improve overall mental well-being.

  1. **Enhanced Body Awareness**: Pilates encourages a mind-body connection, increasing awareness of how your body moves and how to engage muscles properly during exercises.

  1. **Injury Prevention**: Strengthening the core and improving flexibility and balance can help prevent injuries by ensuring better movement mechanics and reducing strain on joints and muscles.

  1. **Rehabilitation and Pain Relief**: Pilates can be beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries or dealing with chronic pain. It is often used in physical therapy to improve mobility and strengthen weakened areas.

  1. **Improved Athletic Performance**: Athletes often use Pilates to enhance their performance. The core strength, flexibility, and balance gained from Pilates can improve efficiency and power in various sports.

  1. **Enhanced Breathing**: Pilates emphasizes proper breathing techniques, which can improve lung capacity and oxygenation of the blood, contributing to better overall health.

  1. **Low Impact**: Pilates is gentle on the joints, making it an ideal exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels, including those with joint issues or recovering from injuries.

Is Pilates the same as Yoga?

Like Yoga, there are many benefits to Pilates. Pilates helps increase strength, flexibility, and muscle tone with an emphasis on postural alignment and functional movement and flexibility. Both are considered low impact forms for exercise. The main difference is that in Yoga you adopt a position and hold it or flow into a different position. In Pilates, you adopt a position then challenge your core by moving your arms and/or legs. Pilates applies a resistance system using springs, bands or rings to increase the strength aspect.

Depending on your exercise regimen, it is recommended that you take Pilates sessions one to three times a week.
